Soha Ali Khan Opens Up About Online Trolling Over Interfaith Marriage and Societal Expectations

Actor Soha Ali Khan, who recently returned to the screen with the horror sequel Chhorii 2, has candidly shared her thoughts on handling criticism surrounding her interfaith marriage to actor Kunal Kemmu. Speaking in a recent interview, Soha revealed how she’s learned to rise above the unwarranted comments that often surface on social media whenever she shares glimpses of her personal life — especially during festive occasions.

Soha, who comes from a family rooted in both Hindu and Muslim heritage, noted that she’s grown used to the barrage of questions about her faith, especially after marrying into a Hindu household. “I’ve developed a bit of a thick skin over time,” she explained. “It’s reached a point where the comments don’t really affect me emotionally, but I can’t help but notice how frequently people question my religion whenever I post something festive. If I post a Diwali greeting, someone will ask how many rozas I observed during Ramadan. When I share a Holi moment, they question what kind of Muslim I am.”

Despite the persistence of such remarks, Soha handles them with grace and detachment. What strikes her most, she added, is how deeply rooted these judgments still are, even in modern, educated circles. Speaking further about the societal pressures women continue to face, the Rang De Basanti actor reflected on the outdated belief that a family is only considered “complete” with the birth of a son. “It’s surprising how even today, in some privileged and well-educated families, there’s an underlying sentiment that if you don’t have a son, something’s missing,” she shared. “I have a daughter, and I couldn’t be happier. Most people around me are supportive and loving, but every now and then, you still sense that old-fashioned mindset lingering.”

Soha and Kunal’s love story began on the sets of the film Dhoondte Reh Jaoge, where they met and eventually fell in love. After several years of dating, the couple tied the knot in a quiet, private ceremony in 2015. Two years later, they welcomed their daughter, Inaaya Naumi Kemmu, who frequently features in the couple’s cheerful family posts on social media.

In addition to her personal reflections, Soha also spoke about her latest professional venture, Chhorii 2, which marks her comeback to acting. Directed by Vishal Furia, the film continues the chilling narrative of the 2021 original, with Soha taking on the role of ‘Daasi Maa’ — a stark departure from her previous characters. Sharing screen space with Nushrratt Bharuccha and Gashmeer Mahajani, Soha’s performance in the film has drawn praise, even though the film itself has received mixed reviews from audiences. Many noted that the sequel veered more towards suspense and psychological drama rather than outright horror.

Chhorii 2 is now available for streaming on Prime Video.
