Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hegde’s action-thriller “Deva,” which underperformed at the box office, is set for its digital release.

Shahid Kapoor's "Deva" Marks Rosshan Andrrews' Bollywood Debut; OTT Release Set

Shahid Kapoor’s recent action-thriller, “Deva,” is poised for its digital debut, moving to the streaming platform Netflix following a disappointing run in cinemas. The film, which initially hit theaters on January 31st, failed to capture the audience’s attention, leading to its swift transition to the online realm. Netflix India officially announced the film’s streaming release, sharing details through their Instagram account, signaling a new chapter for the movie’s journey.

“Deva” holds the distinction of marking Malayalam director Rosshan Andrrews’ entry into Hindi cinema. The film features Shahid Kapoor in the role of a determined police officer, navigating a complex web of crime and intrigue. Alongside Kapoor, the cast includes Pooja Hegde in a pivotal role, supported by Kubbra Sait and Pavail Gulati.

Netflix India’s Instagram post showcased the film’s poster, accompanied by energetic lyrics from one of its musical tracks: “Bhasad macha 🥁🥁🥁 Trigger chala 🚨🚨🚨 Deva aa raha hai 🔥.” Notably, the poster also explicitly states the OTT release date as March 28th, clarifying when audiences can expect to view the film from their homes.

In “Deva,” Shahid Kapoor portrays ACP Dev Ambre, a character grappling with memory loss as he investigates the murder of his closest friend. Pooja Hegde plays Diya Sathaye, a reporter and Dev’s romantic interest, adding a layer of personal connection to the unfolding drama. Additionally, it has been noted that “Deva” is an adaptation of the 2013 Malayalam film “Mumbai Police,” albeit with alterations to the climax and refinements to the narrative and screenplay. Those changes did not, however, make the movie a box office success.

Critical reception for “Deva” was mixed. Shubhra Gupta, in her review, awarded the film 1.5 stars, citing “loose threads and long slack stretches” as significant drawbacks. However, she acknowledged moments where Shahid Kapoor’s performance shone, reminding viewers of his acting prowess, particularly in scenes that showcased his character’s vulnerability. This film follows a string of performances from Shahid Kapoor, and represents his second consecutive theatrical flop, following his previous film, “Jersey,” a Hindi remake, which did not perform well. Prior to these theatrical releases, Kapoor found success in the digital realm with his series debut in Raj and DK’s “Farzi,” which streamed on Prime Video. The move to Netflix for “Deva” represents an opportunity for the film to find a new audience and potentially redeem itself in the digital space.
