Politician and social worker Priya Dutt, sister of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, recently opened up about her feelings regarding the biopic Sanju, directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Although the film, starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, was both a commercial and critical success, Priya has now shared her thoughts on what she believes the film missed out on.
In a candid chat with journalist Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Priya admitted she was left questioning the film’s narrative choices — particularly the limited portrayal of their family, including their legendary parents, Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt. The film briefly featured Paresh Rawal and Manisha Koirala portraying their parents, but Priya felt their deep influence on Sanjay’s life wasn’t explored with the attention it deserved.
She went on to express that, for her, the film felt less like a biopic and more like a selective retelling of certain chapters of Sanjay’s life. One point that especially puzzled her was the heavy focus on a friend, played by Vicky Kaushal, rather than on the family dynamics. According to Priya, the character wasn’t based on one specific individual but was an “amalgamation” of several friends from Sanjay’s real life — which she feels diverted attention away from meaningful family relationships.
Speaking about the portrayal of her parents and their bond with Sanjay, Priya added, “I personally felt the film didn’t do full justice, especially to my mother and father. Their influence on Sanjay’s life and the depth of the father-son relationship could have been explored much more. There was so much more that could have been shown.”
Priya’s honest reflection has sparked conversations among fans, who have long admired Sunil Dutt and Nargis not just for their cinematic legacy but also for their personal strength in navigating Sanjay Dutt’s turbulent life journey.
