Interview | Sara Ali Khan on Dealing with Trolling: “When It Gets Personal, I Try Not to Let It In”

Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan has carved a unique space for herself in the Hindi film industry with her refreshing honesty, charm, and talent. Despite being one of the most popular young stars of her generation, Sara has also been no stranger to online trolling and criticism. In a recent interview, the Zara Hatke Zara Bachke actress opened up about how she manages negativity and what keeps her grounded amid the noise of social media.

“Trolling Has Become a Part of Public Life”

Reflecting on the impact of social media, Sara admitted that while the internet has helped artists connect with fans like never before, it also comes with its share of challenges. “Trolling has become a part of being a public figure today,” she said. “You can’t please everyone, and you can’t control what people say about you. The best thing you can do is focus on your work and keep moving forward.”

Sara explained that she has learned to develop emotional distance from online criticism. “Initially, it used to affect me because I thought people misunderstood me. But over time, I realized that everyone has an opinion, and not all of it is kind or constructive,” she said with a calm smile.

“When It Gets Personal, I Try Not to Let It In”

Talking about the more personal side of trolling — especially comments about her family, relationships, or appearance — Sara revealed that she tries not to internalize them. “When it gets personal, I try not to let it in. I remind myself that these people don’t really know me. Their words say more about them than they do about me,” she stated.

She added that being in the public eye means constantly being judged, but she chooses to focus on positivity. “I know who I am, and I know the values my parents have given me. That keeps me centered,” she said, referring to her actor parents, Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh.

“I Use Criticism to Grow, Not to Break”

Sara also believes that some criticism can be constructive if taken in the right spirit. “If someone points out something about my performance, I try to see if there’s truth in it. As actors, we’re always learning. But when it becomes hateful or personal, I switch off. I won’t give energy to that,” she said.

The actress shared that surrounding herself with genuine people — friends, family, and colleagues who give honest feedback — helps her stay balanced. “My team, my mother, and my brother (Ibrahim) keep me real. They don’t let success get to my head, and they don’t let negativity pull me down,” she added.

Balancing Stardom and Self-Awareness

Sara, known for her candidness in interviews, has often spoken about the pressure of being a “star kid” and how she constantly works to prove her merit through her performances. “There are expectations because of where I come from, but at the end of the day, only talent and hard work sustain you,” she said.

Her journey since debuting in Kedarnath has been filled with both acclaim and criticism. Yet, Sara continues to evolve — experimenting with roles, from romantic comedies like Love Aaj Kal and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke to upcoming projects that showcase a more mature side of her as an actor.

“The Love Always Outweighs the Hate”

Ending on a positive note, Sara said that while trolling exists, the love she receives from fans is far greater. “I’m grateful for the people who support me. Every time someone comes up to me and says they liked my film, it makes all the hard work worth it. The love always outweighs the hate,” she smiled.

As social media continues to play a huge role in shaping celebrity narratives, Sara Ali Khan’s calm and mature approach to dealing with negativity stands as an example for young stars in the spotlight. Her mantra is simple — stay grounded, stay grateful, and never let the noise drown out your truth.
