The buzz around the remake of the late Sridevi’s legendary comedy Chaalbaaz has once again stirred up heated conversations among movie lovers. According to industry chatter, Janhvi Kapoor has been roped in to headline the modern adaptation, a move that has left many fans both surprised and critical.
Earlier, it was widely reported that Shraddha Kapoor was being considered to step into the double role that Sridevi had made immortal back in 1989. Shraddha’s charming screen presence and knack for comedy made her a fan-favourite choice. However, with Janhvi Kapoor now said to be taking on the project, social media has exploded with mixed reactions.
On X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, several cinephiles expressed disappointment, arguing that Janhvi still needs stronger comic timing to carry such an iconic role. Some users went so far as to suggest that other actresses, like Sanya Malhotra, might have been a better fit given her proven versatility and ability to balance drama with humour. One fan even wrote, “Why Janhvi? Please take Sanya Malhotra—she will kill it in this role.”
At the same time, a section of Janhvi’s supporters defended her, highlighting her recent performances in films like Good Luck Jerry and Mili, where she showcased growth as a performer. They believe that while the challenge is immense, it could also be the breakthrough role that pushes her career to the next level.
The original Chaalbaaz, directed by Pankaj Parashar, remains one of Sridevi’s most celebrated films, where she effortlessly played twin sisters with completely opposite personalities—one timid and the other bold. The film’s humour, songs, and Sridevi’s unmatched charisma made it a cult classic. Any remake of such a film naturally comes with towering expectations, and comparisons are inevitable.
As of now, the makers have not released an official statement confirming Janhvi’s casting, but the online debate continues to trend, with fans anxiously waiting to see if she can rise to the challenge of recreating her mother’s magic on screen.
