Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Sardaarji 3’ Shelves India Release Plans Amid Growing Indo-Pak Strains; Hania Aamir’s Debut in Punjabi Cinema Put on Hold

In an unexpected turn of events, the highly anticipated Punjabi film Sardaarji 3, starring global music sensation and actor Diljit Dosanjh alongside Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, will no longer see its planned theatrical release in India. This decision comes amid escalating diplomatic and political friction between India and Pakistan, which appears to have had a direct impact on the film’s cross-border distribution strategy.

The third installment of the beloved Sardaarji franchise had created a buzz not just for its high production value and fresh storyline, but also for casting Hania Aamir — a popular face in Pakistani cinema — opposite Diljit Dosanjh for the first time. Her presence had stirred considerable interest among fans across both nations, with many hoping the film would serve as a bridge in cultural exchange between the two regions.

However, tensions between the two neighbouring countries seem to have overshadowed those aspirations. Citing the current political climate and associated release risks, the film’s producers have reportedly decided to refrain from launching Sardaarji 3 in Indian cinemas for the time being. While there has been no official statement from Indian authorities restricting the film, insiders suggest that the prevailing sentiments in India have made the release unfeasible from a commercial standpoint.

A source close to the project revealed, “The situation is sensitive. With a Pakistani actor in a lead role, the makers felt it was safer to avoid controversy. The film will instead focus on releasing in overseas Punjabi markets, including Canada, the UK, and Australia, where both Diljit and Hania have a massive fan base.”

The move has disappointed many Indian fans of the Sardaarji franchise, which has consistently delivered a unique blend of humor, fantasy, and family drama since its debut. Sardaarji 3 was being touted as the biggest film of the series, with lavish sets, international locations, and a soundtrack composed by some of the biggest names in Punjabi music.

Interestingly, Sardaarji 3 also marks a significant milestone for Diljit Dosanjh, as he takes on a triple role for the first time in his career, a move that had already begun generating early awards buzz. The film’s trailer, which dropped earlier this year, received widespread acclaim for its humor, VFX quality, and Diljit’s impeccable comic timing. Hania Aamir, too, had earned praise for her onscreen charm and her seamless entry into Punjabi cinema.

Despite the setback in India, the team behind the film remains hopeful. Speaking at a press interaction in London, where the film will have its world premiere, Diljit commented, “Art has no boundaries. We’ve made this film with love, and I hope it reaches people who appreciate that. Wherever it plays, it will speak for itself.”

For now, Sardaarji 3 will be unavailable to audiences in India, much to the disappointment of fans. Whether it eventually sees a digital release in the Indian market or not remains to be seen, but for now, the cultural and political landscape has once again reminded us of how art and geopolitics can often find themselves at odds.
