As the release of major films like Prithviraj Sukumaran’s “L2: Empuraan” and AR Murugadoss’ “Sikandar” draws near, Vicky Kaushal’s “Chhaava” is nearing the end of its theatrical journey. Despite early expectations that it might eclipse “Stree 2’s” domestic and global records as the top Hindi film of 2024, “Chhaava’s” box office momentum has drastically slowed.
The historical action-drama now faces a significant challenge in surpassing Amar Kaushik’s “Stree 2” within the Indian market. Its last remaining hope hinges on “Sikandar’s” potential underperformance in Hindi-speaking regions, which could allow “Chhaava” to maintain its screen presence.
Monday’s figures paint a stark picture: “Chhaava” registered a mere Rs 1.85 crore in India nett collection, according to Sacnilk’s early estimates, marking its lowest single-day earning thus far. The Hindi version contributed Rs 1.75 crore, while the Telugu edition added a paltry Rs 10 lakh. This represents a substantial 60.22 percent decline from Sunday’s Rs 4.65 crore collection, signaling a sharp drop in audience interest.
Despite “Chhaava” edging closer to “Stree 2’s” domestic nett collection, trailing by just Rs 12.89 crore (Rs 585.1 crore vs. Rs 597.99 crore), its window of opportunity is rapidly closing. The highly anticipated “Empuraan” is set to unleash its “toofan” on Thursday, having already shattered pre-sales records, followed by “Sikandar” on Sunday. This impending double-whammy significantly jeopardizes “Chhaava’s” remaining theatrical run.
Furthermore, with its overseas collection stagnating at a modest Rs 90.50 crore, bringing its global total to Rs 785.5 crore, “Chhaava” is now confirmed to fall short of “Stree 2’s” worldwide gross of Rs 857.15 crore. The Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna starrer’s hopes of surpassing its 2024 predecessor are fading fast as the box office landscape prepares for a major shift.
