Ben Affleck, known for his portrayal of Batman in films like “Batman v Superman” and “Justice League,” has openly discussed his struggles with alcohol and the challenges he faced during that period. While he expressed fondness for “Batman v Superman” and his brief appearances in “The Flash” and “Suicide Squad,” his experience on “Justice League” was markedly different.
“I certainly wouldn’t want to replicate an experience like that,” Affleck stated, attributing the difficulties to “misalignment of agendas, understandings, expectations,” and his own “significant failings.” He acknowledged that his growing drinking habit, exacerbated by his marriage’s dissolution, contributed to his struggles.
Affleck admitted to drinking heavily alone in his hotel room during the “Justice League” production, describing that time as his “nadir.” He explained the cycle of seeking relief through destructive behaviors, which ultimately worsened his situation.
His self-criticism extended beyond his acting, focusing on “what I was bringing to work every day.” He recognized that his unhappiness negatively impacted the set’s atmosphere. “I didn’t cause problems, but I came in and I did my job and I went home. But you’ve got to do a little bit better than that,” he said.
This realization, coupled with concerns about his well-being, led him to step away from reprising the role in “The Batman.” He recalled someone advising him that taking on the project would likely lead to a relapse.
Affleck also discussed how his sobriety, now five years strong, has positively influenced his work.
He recounted his experience with “The Way Back,” where he openly addressed his recovery. While he didn’t intend to become a spokesperson for recovering alcoholics, he’s comfortable discussing his journey, emphasizing that it’s no longer the central focus of his life.
