Kajol Recalls Memory Loss Incident on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Set: “SRK Gave Me Medicine, Karan Johar Joked I Was a Background Dancer”

Bollywood actress Kajol, known for her vibrant screen presence and infectious energy, recently revisited a rather startling yet humorous episode from the sets of one of her most iconic films — Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. While the 1998 romantic drama remains a nostalgic favorite for fans across generations, few know about the incident during filming that led to Kajol briefly losing her memory after a sudden fall. The actress opened up about the experience, blending honesty with her trademark wit.

While chatting about some memorable behind-the-scenes moments from her illustrious career, Kajol revealed that during the shooting of the popular song “Yeh Ladka Hai Deewana,” she took a tumble that resulted in a temporary loss of memory. “I fell flat on my face while riding a bicycle,” she shared. “One moment I was laughing and rehearsing, and the next thing I know — everything went blank. I couldn’t remember anything. It was like a switch had been turned off.”

What makes the story even more unforgettable is how her co-star Shah Rukh Khan and debutant director Karan Johar reacted to the situation. According to Kajol, Shah Rukh immediately came to her aid and offered her some medicine to help with the dizziness and pain. “He was so concerned — trying to get me to rest, giving me something for the headache,” she recalled. “He kept asking if I was okay, but I had no idea what was going on.”

Meanwhile, Karan Johar, who was directing his very first film at the time, tried to diffuse the tense situation with humor — something Kajol remembers fondly. “Karan looked at me and said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re just a background dancer in the film anyway,’” she laughed. “That actually made me laugh, even though I was completely disoriented.”

Despite the seriousness of temporarily losing her memory, Kajol now looks back at the moment with amusement and gratitude. “In hindsight, it was scary, yes — but also kind of hilarious, especially considering how the guys handled it. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with both of them.”

The actress eventually recovered her memory after some rest, and the shoot resumed. Interestingly, the song turned out to be one of the film’s most fun and energetic sequences — with no trace of the behind-the-scenes chaos it had been born from. “Every time I see that song now, I think, ‘Ah yes, the song that wiped my memory,’” Kajol quipped.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, released in 1998, went on to become a defining film of its era, turning Karan Johar into a household name and cementing the trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji as one of Bollywood’s most beloved ensembles. While the film is celebrated for its emotional depth, iconic fashion, and unforgettable dialogues, this lesser-known incident adds a quirky and personal chapter to its legacy.

Kajol’s candid confession has since gone viral, reminding fans once again why she’s adored not just for her acting but for her openness and humor. In an age where celebrity anecdotes are carefully curated, her genuine recollections offer a refreshing glimpse into the unfiltered chaos of filmmaking — one fall, one laugh, and one unforgettable memory (or lack thereof) at a time.
