Prateik Babbar Addresses Speculation About His Sexuality: “In Bollywood, It’s Still Considered a Taboo Topic”

Actor Prateik Babbar, son of legendary actress Smita Patil and actor-politician Raj Babbar, has never shied away from expressing his individuality. In a recent conversation, he broke his silence on long-standing rumors surrounding his sexuality, candidly addressing the whispers and misconceptions that have followed him through his journey in the Indian film industry.

Responding to questions about the speculation that he’s gay, Prateik remarked that while he’s aware of the chatter, it doesn’t bother him anymore. However, he took a moment to reflect on the larger issue at hand — how conversations about sexual orientation remain uncomfortable in certain circles, especially in the entertainment world. “It’s still considered a taboo in Bollywood,” he admitted. “Even today, many people are afraid to speak openly about their sexual identity because of how the industry and society at large might react.”

Prateik emphasized that personal identity, especially one as private and profound as sexual orientation, should never be a source of shame or gossip. He acknowledged the courage it takes for individuals to come out in a conservative environment and expressed admiration for those who live their truth. “People out there — artists, creators, even fans — are open and proud about who they are. And I think that deserves respect, not ridicule,” he added.

While the actor made it clear that he is straight, he also pointed out that the real issue isn’t about his own orientation but the stigma that still lingers around discussing these topics in mainstream cinema circles. “I’ve been asked about it more than once,” he shared. “And while I don’t find the question offensive, it tells me how uncomfortable we still are when someone challenges the norm or doesn’t fit a particular image.”

Prateik also reflected on how Bollywood, despite being a progressive and influential cultural force, often lags behind when it comes to inclusivity and honest conversations around LGBTQ+ representation. “We have come a long way in many ways, but we still hesitate to cast queer characters with the same respect or depth as we do straight ones. There’s still fear, still stereotypes. That has to change,” he said.

Known for his unconventional choices and his offbeat charm, Prateik has always walked his own path in the film industry — often choosing roles that challenge the typical Bollywood mold. His comments have sparked conversations online about representation, tolerance, and the urgent need to de-stigmatize discussions around gender and sexuality.

In speaking out, Prateik joins a growing number of voices from the film fraternity who are urging Bollywood to be more open, more understanding, and more accepting — not just in the roles it creates on screen, but in how it treats the people who bring those stories to life.
