Celebrated fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has designed bridal outfits for some of the biggest names in Bollywood — from Anushka Sharma and Deepika Padukone to Alia Bhatt — but it was Rani Mukerji’s wedding that truly tested his team’s ability to work under pressure. In a recent candid interview, Sabyasachi revealed that Rani gave him an even tighter deadline than Alia Bhatt did for her own much-talked-about wedding ensemble.
Rani Mukerji, who is famously private about her personal life, tied the knot with filmmaker Aditya Chopra in an extremely intimate and secret ceremony in Italy back in 2014. Despite the couple’s efforts to keep everything under wraps, their wedding has always piqued public curiosity — and now, Sabyasachi has offered a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the preparations, especially the making of Rani’s bridal lehenga.
“Rani gave us the least amount of time — even less than Alia,” Sabyasachi said, referring to Alia Bhatt’s minimalist and elegant bridal look that also became a cultural moment. While Alia’s wedding in 2022 was planned in relative secrecy, Rani’s ceremony was shrouded in even more mystery, with only close friends and family in attendance. The designer added with a laugh, “It was chaos — but the beautiful kind.”
He described Rani as decisive, stylish, and clear in her vision, which helped the process despite the short turnaround. “She was very sure of what she wanted. There was no back and forth. That helped us stick to the timeline, even if it was a crazy one,” he explained. The designer praised Rani’s timeless aesthetic and how she preferred something classic over something flashy. That, he noted, aligned perfectly with his signature design philosophy.
Interestingly, Sabyasachi pointed out that while Alia’s look was a trending topic for weeks — especially with the ivory sari, minimal makeup, and natural glow — Rani’s bridal appearance was never fully revealed to the public. Only a few glimpses have surfaced over the years, keeping the allure of her wedding attire alive in public imagination. Yet, for the designer, the emotional resonance of Rani’s wedding still stands out among the many celebrity nuptials he’s been a part of.
The revelation also underlines the contrasting personalities of Rani and Alia, both of whom are considered powerhouse performers but approach their personal milestones in different ways. While Alia embraced a slightly more public-facing ceremony with social media posts and official photos, Rani and Aditya Chopra opted for complete privacy, making the event feel even more intimate.
Sabyasachi’s anecdote adds a new layer to the mystique around Rani Mukerji’s wedding — showcasing not only the whirlwind timeline but also the deep trust she placed in his vision. Despite the time crunch, the designer said the outcome was “effortless, elegant, and very Rani.”
It’s another reminder of how even under the most hectic deadlines, iconic moments can be created — especially when they’re built on clarity, creativity, and just a touch of madness.
